The Whale

A new international attraction

The Whale is scheduled to open in June 2027 in Andenes, Vesterålen. The vision is to create the world’s most meaningful encounter between humans and whales.

The attraction combines awe-inspiring experiences with close insights into the fascinating world of whales, offering engaging storytelling about their lives. With a strong focus on science, art, and sustainability, The Whale aims to inspire visitors to protect whales and the ocean.

The Experience

The Whale covers every aspect of whales: their evolution, biology, behavior, communication, and habitats. Through the experience, we also delve into the deeper theme of humanity’s relationship with whales. How are we connected to them through evolution? How have we valued, revered, hunted, and pursued them? How are they depicted in literature, and how do we study them? These questions guide visitors on a journey to understand the profound connection between humans and these magnificent creatures.

Island of Whales

Andøya in Vesterålen is one of the best places in the world for year-round whale watching. This is thanks to Bleiksdjupet, an underwater canyon that stretches toward the shore, just 10 km from the coast. Here, nutrient-rich waters rise to the surface, creating ideal conditions for abundant marine life and feeding grounds for whales. Whale watching was established in the late 1980s, and since then, people from all over the world have visited Andøya to experience the whales and its stunning natural beauty.

The Whale in the making

The Whale began as an idea in 2014 and has since reached several key milestones. In 2019, Dorte Mandrup won the architectural competition, and in the fall of 2024, the contractor Hent and experience designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Tamschick Media+Space were selected. The project is funded through a collaborative effort of public and private contributions, with the final portion of public financing secured in November 2024. After years of dedicated work, the opening is planned for 2027.
