Sustainability

Our work to develop The Whale – and what The Whale will become – is rooted in a deep respect for nature and a commitment to creating a positive impact on the environment and society. On this page, you can explore our key focus areas within environmental, social, and sustainable development. Experience and education

The Whale aims to create the most meaningful encounter between humans and whales. Through engaging experiences, we inspire visitors to protect the ocean and ensure a healthy environment for whales. We seek to deepen understanding of the interplay between humans and nature, with a particular emphasis on children and youth. By sharing new research on whales and marine life, we make this knowledge accessible to everyone.

Cultural venue and meeting place

The Whale will serve as a significant cultural venue for the local community. By hosting exhibitions, concerts, and various events, we aim to enrich local cultural life and contribute to a greater sense of belonging. The site will function as a vibrant meeting place, where both residents and visitors can engage in meaningful conversations and enjoy inspiring activities.

Jobs and ripple effects

The Whale generates positive ripple effects for Andøy and the surrounding region, contributing to the development of year-round tourism. The attraction creates new jobs, both directly and indirectly, while boosting revenue for accommodations, dining establishments, transportation services, shops, and activity providers. We support sustainable destination development by actively participating in local and regional projects and networks.

Construction and building process

The construction process is the cornerstone of The Whale's commitment to the environment, climate, and community. Every decision, from materials to energy efficiency, is made with a holistic focus on sustainability. We utilize recognized environmental management systems to ensure the project delivers an eco-friendly, low-maintenance building that provides excellent user experiences. At the same time, we prioritize cost efficiency and financial responsibility.

In connection with the launch of the architectural competition, the local community was invited to a workshop with experience designers from Ralph Appelbaum Associates, London. The workshop began with several activities, including an experience where all participants stood inside a mock whale created by young artist Julianne Stave. Photo: Simen Bergvik

Health, safety, and ethical practices

We are committed to a safe, sustainable, and ethical construction process. Through close collaboration with contractors and suppliers, we ensure high standards for health, environment, and safety. The Whale aims to be an inclusive workplace and experience where everyone feels respected, represented, and welcomed.

Participation

Collaboration with the local community and stakeholders is vital to our success. The Whale is being developed as a natural part of the local community, in partnership with its residents.

Our commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

The Whale supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on ocean conservation. We actively work toward Goal 14, "Life Below Water," while also contributing to other sustainability goals. Learn more about our commitment in our sustainability strategy.
